Stunning victory for the Abdulla Ahmed Nass Cup

Nass Group Director Fawzi Nass presents the Nass Group cup to Ebrahim Al Afoo

It was a day of upsets at the horse racing in Sakhir as only two favourites obliged in a card of six.

The biggest winner of the day was Erebus, owned by Hadi Ebrahim Al Afoo, trained by Abdulla Kuwaiti and ridden by Patrick Donagly, who beat favourite Bazaruto by half-a-length to win the only feature race of the day which carried a cash prize of BD3,000 and was for the Abdulla Ahmed Nass Cup.

Mutaaheb was third a length behind while Cappa Brack came in fourth, a head adrift.

Another three upsets preceded the feature race. The trend began when Barracuda, owned by Fawzi Abdulla Nass, trained by Fawzi Nass and ridden by Nader A Aziz, upset favourite Barraqah by three-fourth-length to win the race for locally bred horses.

Wagami and Tickity Boo finished joint third.

Lay Claim, owned by Rashid A Rahman Al Jassmi, trained by Yousif Al Ghabri and ridden by Keon Clijmans, continued the upset trend beating Trajectory by half-a-length to win the race for imported horses. Samp was third one-and-one-fourth-length behind while Alaneed finished fourth, another neck behind.

Jimmy The Poacher, owned by Fawzi Abdulla Nass, trained by Fawzi Nass and ridden by Hussain Makki, was another outsider to win a race when it beat The Twelve Steps by five lengths to win the 'Open' race in style.

Handsome Planet was third one-and-one-fourth-length behind while Lois Glin was a further short-head adrift in fourth place.

But the day began on a winning note for a favourite when Obeyaan 1335, owned by Al Wasmiya, trained by Abdulla Kuwaiti and ridden by Ali Al Saffar, beat Al Hamdaany 1349 by six lengths to win the race for Arabian horses. Rabdaan 1133 was third and Al Jellaby 1348 fourth.

The only other favourite to live up to expectations was Blue Bayou, owned by Al Nasseriyeh, trained by Alan Smith and ridden by T Cain, who beat Jock The Scott by a length to win the race for locally bred horses. Basmaan was third and Washitsu fourth.
