Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro, who opened the conference, said the show is a significant event that reflects the unique position enjoyed by the Bahrain as a leading centre for manufacturing ships and boats. He said it is gratifying to see well-known international maritime companies as exhibitors at the event.

"Bahrain is an important centre for the maritime business as the holding of this event and the attendance has proved." He said Bahrain needs more such ventures because it has witnessed a rapid residential development in all sectors.

Exhibitors from around 25 countries are taking part in the show. The Bahrain participation is led by the Arab Shipbuilding and repair Yard Company. Exhibitors include shipbuilding and repair yards, designers, marine equipment manufacturers, software developers, engine and propulsion system manufacturers, maritime societies, ports and many more.

The event, being held under the patronage of Dr Fakhro, is organised by Australian company Baird Publications, which brings out one of the world's leading maritime industry journals. Baird Maritime and Baird Events chairman Neil Baird, welcoming the guests, said shifting the event from neighbouring Sharjah to Bahrain had been a revelation.

"The reception that we have received here and the attendance that the event has attracted is testimony to the fact that we have been successful and we shall return to the country."
